The label on the back has faded with time, but it appears to read “His Great Grandmother’s Portrait presented to George Michael Beauridge on his 18th birthday by his Aunt (?) July 10, 1901.” It’s impossible to imagine that such a gift would elicit a thrilled “thanks” from today’s 18-year-old male obsessing about feedback to his latest Instagram post.
